ALWAYS WAS,
ALWAYS WILL BE.

I acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the Biripi & Worimi land where I work and live.

I pay my respects to Elders past and present for they hold the memories, the traditions and the culture.

I celebrate the stories, culture and traditions of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across this nation.

32 Things I’ve Learned at 32

  1. Nothing and I mean NOTHING can prepare you for parenthood.

  2. Also nothing prepares you for the love handles and extra thigh fat that mysteriously appears after birth.

  3. Never put the tomato directly on the bread.

  4. It takes longer than you think. Plan accordingly.

  5. Pack snacks. Always.

  6. Take a jacket.

  7. Order the thing you want, not the thing you think you should want.

  8. Online shopping is a blessing and a curse and ASOS is the conniving convenience witch behind it.

  9. Only my dad, grandmother and the Queen know how to — and do use — ‘whom’ correctly.

  10. Things are often harder than you think they’ll be but the cliche is true — nothing worth having comes easy.

  11. If that person can do it, why can’t you? You’ll hate yourself later if you don’t try.

  12. You’re never too old to try something new — just do it now. You only ever wish you’d done it sooner.

  13. Hold on to the happy and sleep-filled moments and days, embrace them and enjoy them. Forget the rest.

  14. Sleep depravation IS torture and babies wield it with ease.

  15. Make the most of your time to yourself.

  16. Put down your phone more. Better yet, lose your phone more.

  17. Convenience is worth paying extra for.

  18. It’s really easy to get petrol or pick up milk without a baby.

  19. A good walk is underestimated — it can completely flip your mood, especially if it involves pink skies, the ocean or a view.

  20. Some dreams don’t work out, but that’s okay. It doesn’t mean they won’t ever will.

  21. Disney movies are like therapy.

  22. There’s always multiple solutions to a problem — it probably just takes a good walk to think of it.

  23. Almost nothing is as bad as your anxiety makes you think it is.

  24. Good mental health, more than anything, is about how you talk to yourself. Not just on the good days, but on the bad ones, when you make a mistake, or do something you regret. Learning to talk to yourself positively is one of the best things you can do for yourself.

  25. Fresh bread and butter.

  26. There are a few things that make one feel like oneself and it’s important to do them regularly.

  27. Mother’s guilt start when your baby is around 28 hours old and is expected to last a lifetime.

  28. Expectations are happiness-killers.

  29. There is nothing quite like a new adventure to give life new enthusiasm.

  30. You often have a bigger impact than you know.

  31. There’s two magical hours on a sunny day — just as the sun rises and the day is alive with new colourful possibilities; and just as the sun begins to set and the sky is awash with colour and the ocean twinkles. Both are good times for gratitude.

  32. At this point, there is no greater joy than my baby smiling when she sees me.
